The Skipper Commander Matthew W. FAESSEL was born in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy on June 6, 1952. His first assignment was aboard the attack transport NAVARRO (APA-215) serving as Gunnery Officer and Boat Group Commander.

      After attending CIC School at Glenview, Illinois Commander Faessel was assigned Operations Officer of the destroyer Joseph P. KENNEDY, Jr. (DD-850). Completing this tour he was then ordered as Staff Operations Officer of the newly formed COMDESDIV 181 which was later renamed COMDESDEVGRU TWO.

      Commander FAESSEL's first shore duty assignment was to the Naval Science Department at the U.S. Naval Academy where he served as an instructor of Midshipmen from 1958 to 1961. Following this tour of shore duty he returned to sea as the Staff Operations Officer for COMDESRON 20. After completing this tour he served as Executive Officer of the destroyer HAZELWOOD (DD-531).\

      Commander FAESSEL was selected for postgraduate training in the field of International Relations and attended the American University where he received his Masters Degree. After this graduate work Commander FAESSEL returned for another tour at the U.S. Naval Academy as an instructor in History and later became Executive Officer of the English, History and Government Department. Completing this tour in 1968 he was assigned a one year tour in Vietnam as senior advisor to the Vietnamese Naval Academy at Nha Trang. His performance of duty during this tour resulted in his being awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V and the Vietnamese Honor Medal First Class.

      His present assignment is as Commanding Officer of the Newport based destroyer CHARLES P. CECIL (DD-835).
